Closed a Fiscal Year by Accident? Northern Comfort Reverse Reopens It
Some clicks in Business Central you'd really like to take back. "Close Year" is high on that list — and it used to be final. As of version 1.0.182.0, Northern Comfort Reverse can reopen a fiscal year that was closed by mistake.
The idea wasn't ours — it came out of customer feedback: this exact thing happened to someone, and the question "so what now?" is what started the feature.
The Problem: One Click, No Way Back
Closing a fiscal year is a one-way street in the standard. Once the action has run, every accounting period of that year is flagged as closed and date locked — and the standard offers no function to undo it.
In practice this happens more often than you'd think: a year gets closed too early because the periods were set up wrong. Someone tries out the year-end close "just quickly" — in production. Or the close runs before the last correcting entries from the tax advisor have arrived.
What follows is a lot of frustration and very few options: a support ticket, database surgery, in the worst case a discussion about setting up a fresh company. All because of a flag sitting in the wrong place.
The Solution: Undo the Close
Northern Comfort Reverse undoes the close exactly where it was set: the closed and date locked flags on the affected accounting periods are lifted, the fiscal year is open again, and you can close it properly afterwards.
That fits the principle the whole app is built on: we build the way back that the standard doesn't provide — from reversing transactions that have already been applied all the way to the fiscal year itself.
The Limit: As Long as the Income Statement Hasn't Been Closed
There is one condition, and it's a deliberate one: reopening works as long as no close income statement has been posted in the affected fiscal year. Once the income statement balances have been transferred, the year stays closed.
Honesty as a feature — here as well. We could have opened the way back beyond that point too, but from there on the close is carried by real entries, not just by a flag. And the accidental click we're talking about almost always happens earlier anyway: the year gets closed too soon or by mistake, the income statement close comes later. That's exactly the window this function covers.
